For millennia, Wollombi has been an important meeting place to which Aboriginal people would travel great distances for trade, social connection and ceremony. There are more than 300 significant Aboriginal sites dating back over 13,000 years.

Today, the small village of Wollombi is a gateway to the Hunter Region, and a wonderful place to connect with the ancient ‘lore’ stories of the region’s traditional owners.

These are the creation stories passed down by Elders. Far from being ‘just myths’, these stories teach us how we should be and relate to all things around us.

Nearby Mount Yengo is a spiritual and ceremonial site to the Aborigines of the Wollombi wilderness—every bit as sacred to the these people as Uluru is to those of the Red Centre. From Yengo’s summit, Baiame—one of the primary creative forces—stepped back into the skyworld after life had been created and set the Lore in place.

Walk the landscape here and take in the incredible views on the walking track and lookouts over Mount Yengo and Wollombi wilderness areas. The rare velvet wattle thrives here, blooming bright yellow in spring. For the perfect shot, Finchley lookout is the place to be with Mount Yengo standing tall in the distance.

Then spend a couple of hours at the Map Site learning the local lore stories before returning to Wollombi to visit the Yengo Gallery and the towns multiple charms.
